“Visual Accoustics” opens in Austin March 5, 2010

In October 2008, Chris had the privilege of spending the day with Julius Shulman, world-renowned architectural photographer featured in the documentary ”Visual Acoustics: The Modernism of Julius Shulman” (www.juliusshulmanfilm.com). It was an honor for Chris to tour one of the most influential photographers of modern architecture through the ma model home, Luna, and several other KRDB projects. They discussed responsible growth, the design community, and Mr. Shulman’s “plans” for Austin.  Mr. Shulman passed away in July at 98, but his photgraphs, ideas and legacy lives on.

According to the New York Times, “‘Visual Acoustics’ traces Mr. Shulman’s career and the rise of the Modernist movement to which he’s indelibly linked. Filmed by a first-time director, Eric Bricker, and narrated by Dustin Hoffman, it catches Mr. Shulman making a victory lap of sorts, revisiting homes he photographed decades earlier. They include the Kaufmann House by Richard Neutra, and Case Study House No. 22, an elegant glass box by Pierre Koenig perched high above Los Angeles, left. (Mr. Shulman’s images of the latter home, with the nighttime city stretching out below, remain some of Modernism’s greatest advertisements.) As the film makes clear, Mr. Shulman wasn’t simply an architectural photographer but a lifestyle propagandist.”

The film opens in Austin March 5th at Regal Arbor Cinema @ Great Hills. In Austin there is a post screening Q& A with director Eric Bricker at the 7:50 p.m. shows on March 5th and 6th and the 2:50 p.m. show on March 7th.
